You may call me crazy for wanting a sky-high rain boot, but what's a woman to do when she attends NY Fashion Week in February, and there's slush and puddles everywhere? Marc Jacobs must have heard my prayers to the fashion gods when he decided to design this FAB patent leather knee-high wedge rain boot for his Marc by Marc Jacobs line. The rubber wedge is 4 inches with a 1/2 inch platform. (YES!!) I just received them in the mail this past weekend, and I am now praying to the rain gods for the perfect opportunity to wear them.

Parallel Universe: Sergio Rossi & Sam Edelman

It's no secret that some brands get their inspiration from the high-end designer pieces they see on the runway. I don't refer to these brands as "knockoffs" -- they are not trying to sell us something for nothing (e.g. an "alleged" Louis Vuitton purse that normally sells for $2,000 for $200). I like to think of them as bringing "designer-inspired" pieces to the masses -- a way for us to live in a parallel universe and have some extra bucks left over (aka "cheap chic").

The Jeffrey Campbell shoe line is known for its towering heels that mimic the likes of Chanel, Balenciaga, Ferragamo, and Christian Louboutin. Early last fall, I realized that Sam Edelman had a "love-love" relationship with Sergio Rossi after I bought these Sergio Rossi metallic slingback platforms from one of my favorite stores in Philadelphia:

Shortly thereafter, I discovered these by Sam Edelman for a fraction of the cost ($99):

Not an exact match, of course, but pretty darn close, AND they come in some great colors, including red and nude patent leather. When I saw these, I thought perhaps it was coincidental -- this is a pretty simple shoe to recreate, and there are many variations out there by many different brands.

However, just a couple of months ago I added these Sergio Rossi's to my collection:

Pretty fab, right? You can't tell by the photo, but it combines three different textures, including pony hair, which makes it a tad bit more challenging to duplicate. Well wouldn't you know last month when I was doing some random searching on Nordstrom's site for shoes, these popped up in my search:

Meet the Sam Edelman "Magdalena," and it retails for $150. Again, a fraction of the cost of the Sergio's (and clearly of a much lesser quality), but at this price, it's a winner.

Once I came across the "Magdalena," I realized the notion of these two shoes being so similar to their designer counterparts really wasn't a "coincidence." There is no doubt that Sam Edelman has a love-love relationship with Sergio Rossi. I'm not mad at him! If it helps the masses rock the "designer look" for a reasonable price, and keeps the consumer from being "ripped-off" by a brand that is selling "knock-offs," that makes it all right with me!!

My Latest Obsession - AIKO

It probably won't come as a surprise to you that I'm not "at one" with wearing sweats out of the house on a regular basis -- other than to the gym. If you didn't get the memo, 2011 is here and moving quickly! In fact, we're already at the end of January. That being said, I'm sure many of you have broken at least one of your New Year's resolutions by now. Have no fear -- here's a way you can redeem yourself. I'm challenging you to make a commitment to focus on YOU this year, and work towards presenting your most fabulous (and fashionable) self every time you walk out the door. Now, I'm not saying it's going to be easy. But . . . if you can pull it off, it will definitely be rewarding! Here is a guideline to send you on your merry way! Repeat after me:

Ever wake up in the morning, spontaneously decide you want to venture out and try to wear something a little different, and panic because you don't know how? That apparently happened to one of my clients last week, and I awakened to a "mayday, mayday" text message she had sent at 6:56 am. Needless to say, I did not get that message or the picture she emailed me giving me a sneak preview of her "look" until she was work. That didn't give us any time to correct that fashion faux pas on the spot, but at least we were able to rectify it a couple of hours later before too many of her co-workers had seen her.

If you ever find yourself in this situation, first pause and acknowledge that this is exactly why our mothers told us in high school to pick out our clothes the night before. (Sorry I had to go there . . . I couldn't resist.) Then, go straight to the internet and do a google search on the trend in question: "How to wear two cardigans?" or "Can I wear a blush-toned dress with a bright platform pump?" You can also search YouTube for possible step-by-step instructions. Regardless of the method you choose, you can feel confident that you walked out the door looking your best.

Farewell My Sweet Lady

It's been well over a month since I've posted a blog entry. As they say -- sometimes life just gets in the way. This past Saturday, we escorted my grandmother, the late Claries Toomer Bennett, to her final earthly resting place in Hope Mills, NC. She was the Matriach of the Bennett family, and her life had a profound effect on every person who came within her reach.

I would be remiss if I didn't dedicate this entry to her. The picture above is of my Grandma taken in the late 1940's . . . she was in her 20's. This picture surfaced over the weekend as people from near and far gathered at her home to celebrate her life. Over the years, many have asked me where my sense of fashion and style originated. I immediately respond "from my mother," who is the epitome of class and sophistication. When I saw this picture only hours before my Grandma's "Homegoing Celebration," I realized it originated with my Grandma. In addition to teaching my mother the virtues of unconditional love and respect, she clearly passed down the attributes of what it means to look like a Lady!

Grandma, you are missed, but never will you be forgotten. I end this blog the way I ended my tribute to her on Saturday . . . "Rejoice my sweet lady. Heaven is happy to welcome one of its finest angels back home."

Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week Kicks Off Tomorrow at its New Location - Lincoln Center's Damrosch Park

I have two favorite times of the year -- February and September. Is it because my favorite holidays are Valentine's Day and Labor Day? Absolutely not! It's because those months include two weeks out of the year when every fashionista feels like she's died and gone to heaven: Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week! And this year provides a tee bit more excitement because after 18 years at Bryant Park (I must say attending my last show there last season was a little bittersweet), the shows have moved to Lincoln Center. I feel like a kid waking up on Christmas morning -- I know I loved all of the presents under the tree last year, but I'm hoping this year's presents will be even better!

The move to Lincoln Center has brought about many firsts, not the least of which is Fashion GPS, a web-based system rolled out by IMG Fashion (the producer of MBFW) that over 80% of the designers showing at the tents have opted to use. Instead of those often lavish paper invitations being sent in the mail, PR firms emailed invitations which contain a link for you to go online and RSVP with a touch of a button. You are immediately sent an email containing a confirmation number (gone are the days when you wonder whether or not your RSVP by email or voicemail was ever received), and . . . drumroll please . . . a barcode to be scanned at one of 9 kiosks on site! (The barcode can even be scanned right from your PDA!) These kiosks will spit out your seating assignment, and off you go to your show. They will even have computer terminals and printers available if you happen to forget to bring your confirmation email with you. IMG is hoping that this will dramatically cut down those long lines (which look more like a sea of people huddled together) you wait in to check in with a PR person frantically looking through a binder filled with names. (Of course the PR teams will still be on hand to handle the real problems and the computer glitches.)

While this to me is the biggest and most dramatic change, the new location now includes a significantly larger space, lounge-style seating in the lobby area to wait around between shows (music to my feet!), two interior courtyards, wireless internet access, and a 4th venue (venue names are now from largest to smallest: "The Theatre," "The Stage," "The Studio," and "The Box"). The Theatre can seat almost 1,000 people and can accommodate another 400 standing; The Stage will fit more than 800 fashionistas; The Studio has seats for 390 plus standing room; and The Box -- a smaller room for designer presentations, industry forums and press conferences -- can hold 450 standing. It also appears as though the chairs in the venues have been replaced with stadium style bench seating, no doubt one of the reasons they are able to accommodate more people.

Although I will miss the first day of shows tomorrow (last day of my Bermuda vacation), I hit the ground running before daybreak on Friday morning to make it to NYC in time for my first show at 9:30 am. My day starts off with Tadashi Shoji, followed by Duckie Brown, Georges Chakra, and Ports 1961. Hopefully I will get a quick nap in at some time so I can be ready for all of the Fashion's Night Out festivities!

Lanvin and H&M Collaborate!

This is probably one of the most exciting rumors to be confirmed in a while! Yesterday WWD (THE voice of the fashion industry) tweeted that we might be seeing yet another fabulous collaboration that would potentially knock our socks off, and today they have come back to say it is indeed true. On November 23, Lanvin for H&M will hit approximately 200 stores - hopefully one near you!

Lanvin is the newest designer to join the ranks of guest star designers like Stella McCartney, Karl Lagerfeld, Zac Posen, and Anna Sui who have created limited edition "cheap chic" lines for cost-friendly chains like H&M and Target. What better news could a fashionista receive right before the last official weekend of summer when the reality of needing to spruce up the fall wardrobe really begins to set in?

If you are one of millions of women like myself who simply can't wait to get your hands on a few of these pieces, I strongly suggest you mark the date on your calendar and plot out your course of action. This collection is likely to sell out in nano seconds!

THINK GREEN!

No, I'm not talking about recycling! Green is without a doubt the go-to hue for the fall season. Now, I must admit . . . just 2 years ago you would not have caught me dead in the color. Although I may have loved the piece, if the color was green, the first thing out of my mouth was: "I don't do green!" I think the color routinely reminded me of Emerald City in "The Wizard of Oz," not exactly the place you reflect upon when you think about must have fashion trends.

Fast forward to last fall when I became somewhat obsessed with the color after Gucci did this beyond fab snakeskin bag in forest green. It literally took my breath away. After seeing this magnificent creation, I began embracing that particular shade as a neutral that could be worn with black, navy, brown, or tan. The next thing I knew I was in Soho at one of my favorite shoe boutiques, Keito, purchasing a pair of "too fierce" platform leather and suede booties in the hue. The end result has been a love connection that was well overdue!

From fabulous ponte dresses to Chanel inspired tweed jackets to cashmere cardigans and platform pumps - you will definitely find that must have piece to add to your wardrobe. After all, it can be easy being green.

We asked and apparently bebe finally listened! This week the brand known for its uber chic styles officially launched its petite line, a much needed remedy for those of us who must get every pair of pants we purchase hemmed!

The petite selections are targeted to women 5'4" and under, and include jackets, pants, and jeans. In the past, bebe has occasionally done a few of their pants in petite lengths, but the selection has been quite limited. By the time you realized the item was sold in petite sizes, they were completely sold out.

5 Easy Steps to a Fiercely Organized Wardrobe

Ever step into your closet and feel like you have nothing to wear? It may not be just because you have become bored with your current wardrobe. More likely than not, it's because you can't see everything your current wardrobe has to offer. Most of us don't go into our kitchen pulling out every drawer and frantically searching for the forks, knives, and spoons. Why? Because each of the utensils has its place in what you refer to as the "silverware drawer." Your closet should reflect the same organization! You can't expect to look fashionable on a daily basis if every morning you're searching for that one piece to make your outfit pop and you NEVER find it. If you want to make getting dressed as simple as it should be, follow these guidelines for a well organized wardrobe.

1. Separate your wardrobe by season. Have an area for your spring/summer clothes and another area for your fall/winter clothes. (If you're anything like me, you probably have separate closets for each season!)

2. Within each season, separate your casual, work, and "After 5" clothes. This will make it easier on those days you oversleep and need to pull together an outfit for work in a nano second.

3. Sort your clothes by type. All of your shirts should be together, skirts, pants, jackets, etc. I would also encourage you to further break this down into groupings. For example, if you are organizing your shirts, place your sleeveless tops together, followed by your short-sleeved tops and then your long-sleeved tops.

4. Color coordinate! Group your white shirts together, followed by your cream shirts, moving from your light shades to your darker shades, and ending with black. Repeat this step for each type of clothing.

5. Organize your shoes so you can see them. If there's not enough space in your closet to display all of them, keep the shoes you tend to wear most often in plain sight. You should store the others in either their original boxes or clear plastic boxes. Place a photograph on the box so you can easily identify the shoes in each box.

One more thing - and this has nothing to do with how you organize your closet, but I would be remiss if I didn't address it now. Get rid of the wire hangers . . . all of them! If you care about the quality of the clothes you buy, then you should care about how well you maintain them. Wire hangers are meant to transport your clothes from the dry cleaners to your closet. After they have served this purpose, they should be disposed of properly (or recycled). They are the quickest and easiest way to cause your clothing to lose its shape (because they can't support the weight of most garments) and to get stains (they rust over time). Invest in a heavy duty hanger. I prefer wood, but there are some high quality plastic ones on the market as well. If space is an issue (wood and plastic hangers do take up quite a bit of space), try Real Simple Slimline Hangers. Whatever you decide, just throw away the wires! Your clothes will thank you, and so will I!

A Sneak Peak at Fall 2010

Fashion waits for no one ladies! Although we just participated in 4th of July festivities this past weekend, and temperatures are soaring into the 100's in some areas of the northeast this week, fall clothing has already hit the stores. I know - I know: it's hard to think about trying on that gorgeous shearling or fur-trimmed leather when you're sweating bullets. However, if you wait until the first frost hits to begin scooping up those must have items for the season, you will be disappointed. So for you brave souls who will risk your bronzer dripping down your face in the interest of fashion, here's a quick preview of some of the must have items for the fall.

While this is the third fall season that grey and shades of plum have ruled the runway, there's a new kid on the block: navy! Many designers have put their individual spin on the actual shade of blue, so be on the lookout for deep blues with a hint of purple as well as gorgeous shades of sapphire blue. Since nude and blush tones were a big trend for Spring 2010, it seems fitting that the shade has darkened a bit for fall, and camel has emerged. We're seeing this shade in everything from chic platform boots to fabulous cashmere coats and satchel handbags.

By far one of my favorite trends of the season is texture. Tweeds are very strong, and you will see many wardrobe staples blending leather, suede, wool, and nylon. I must say that Versace did it best in this ultra funky coat (pictured above)they sent down the runway at the Nordstrom Fall 2010 Designer Preview Runway Show. And speaking of textures, sweater dressing has made a strong comeback from chunky knit coats to dresses and even boots!

Finally, I am loving all of the booties we're seeing - particularly the lace fronts! Cross-body bags, both mini and full-sized, are a big trend that carried over from the spring, and are joined by structured hand-held doctor bags. As far as accessories are concerned, "more is more," so layer those bangles and necklaces to continue looking "fashion fierce" once the temperature drops. Happy Shopping!

MAYDAY MAYDAY . . . I've Outgrown My Closet!

I can't begin to tell you the number of times I've heard the following line from clients or potential clients: "I will call you to go shopping for clothes when I lose weight." Now, I totally understand wanting to get to that perfect size so you can rock that fabulous LBD you have now tucked away in the back of your closet. However, should the goal to shed those extra 5, 10 or even 20 pounds mean that you put off looking good until you reach your optimal weight? I think not!

Creating your personal style is a process, and it shouldn't be governed by the almighty scale. It is important that you look and feel good at any age, and at any size. I'm not advocating that you run out and buy an entirely new wardrobe at a size you absolutely loathe, but it will only make you feel worse if you don't have a few pieces in your closet that make you feel fabulous when you wear them. We as women are very emotional, and the constant reminders to lose weight (e.g. the rack of clothes in your closet that are two sizes too small) tend not to push us to the gym, but rather to the head table at a pity party. In my experience, you will only lose the weight when you look in the mirror, embrace how you look today, and think: "Wow! I could look even better if I shed those additional pounds."

Instead of declaring "I refuse to buy anything until I lose some weight," take an inventory of your current wardrobe. If you need a few pieces to look good NOW, buy them. Just resist the urge to splurge. And about that rack of clothes you can't fit . . . HIDE THEM! They will only make you feel worse every time you open those closet doors, and that my friend is a NO NO!

Sad to say, my internship blogging for Be Fashion Fierce has come to a close. As my final blog, I'd actually like to talk about something I've had an interest in for a while now, but haven't had the chance to address. After never wearing a hat in my life (except for playing softball in my younger years), I've been intrigued by the hats that are in stores for Summer 2010. Since purchasing a large black hat that looks like I'm ready to go to the Kentucky Derby--in a sundress--I've grown to love hats, and I think everyone should have at least one. They are the best accessory to a sundress! Here are a few of the hottest styles . . . wear them to church, to weddings, to the shore, out for a day of shopping with the girls, or whatever occasion you may find.

The Right Swimsuit for Your Body Type

After wandering through the bathing suit section at Target a few days ago, I started to worry whether or not I had chosen the right swimsuit style to best flatter my body type. Being a pear shape, I’m always very conscious of my legs and hips, and generally have to wear a size larger on the bottom than on top. I decided to go with a bandeau ruched top, to give the illusion of a fuller bust, and a high -- but narrow cut -- bottom, to give the illusion of longer legs. Here are a few things to take into consideration when shopping for jeans: fit type, rise, leg fit and wash type.

Fit Type: Most jeans come sized relaxed, slim, regular, etc. Slim and extra slim are best for those who are tall and thin.

Rise: Rise is something that really gets to me when shopping for jeans. No one wants a high rise unless you’re specifically looking for a pair of high waisted jeans. TRY ON your jeans to assess the rise before you buy them. Try sitting, crossing your legs and bending over to make sure that you’re comfortable.

Leg Fit: This is the part that usually gets me the most frustrated when shopping for jeans. These days a lot of women are looking for the skinny leg jean, but some women have larger calves than others. I’ve found what works best for me with a skinny jean is that it MUST have spandex or lycra in it to give it some stretch, otherwise it will not fit over my calves. Also, look at other cuts like boot cut, straight, skinny, wide, flare, etc. Don't forget to keep in mind the shape of your hips and shoulders when choosing a leg fit in order to give your entire body a uniform silhouette.

Wash Type: Darker washes tend to be more flattering and thinning, and are also easier to dress up if you’re wearing jeans out at night. Whisker washes draw attention to the hips and thighs. Lighter washes can hide a multitude of sins BUT can also make some look heavier, so be careful when trying these on and know what look you’re going for. Also, color washes can tend to add stiffness to the jeans because of the larger amount of dye in them.

Lastly, when you’re shopping for your jeans, don’t be afraid to pull a sales associate aside to assist you. Get opinions in the dressing room so that you don’t walk out wearing a mistake. Also, research your jean companies. Most websites have great sizing tools for denim for all body shapes and sizes; take advantage of that! And finally, it’s not always true that spending more money gets you a better fitting jean. Every body type is different, and brands that you’d never imagine trying just might be the ones to surprise you!

Zac Posen For Target

Designer Zac Posen’s budget line for Target recently hit stores. Posen's line was one of the most highly anticipated launches for Targets GO lines, sold internationally. Target quotes on their website that “The acclaimed Zac Posen collection is composed of day wear, suiting and evening wear, designed for sophisticated, feminine, strong women of a diverse age range.” There’s a great mix of fun prints and silohuettes for every shape ranging from $16.99-$200. Of course, I’ve fallen head over heels for the snap tape dress that is already out of stock online, so if you see something you love and must have, buy it now before it’s gone! Who's Your Favorite Up-and-Coming Designer?

A few months ago working backstage at Fashion Week in New York, a new designer caught my eye that I think you all will love. Abigail Lorick designer of Lorick, chose an elegant presentation for her line rather than a runway show. Her pieces were like artwork -- very vintage, romantic, and wearable . . . the kind of clothes that make women feel like their "Sunday’s best" again. Since seeing her presentation, I’ve been mildly obsessed with her designs. Lorick attended FIT for design and has recently become successful launching her own line in 2007. Her clothes have been featured in countless high-fashion magazines and showcased on the hit show "Gossip Girl." She now sells her clothes internationally, but also close to home at Barneys New York and even in Philadelphia at Pileggi. Check out some of my favorite looks from her Spring 2010 line. Spotlight On Spring/Summer Accessories

There’s a lot going on in the world of accessories for Spring/Summer 2010! I'm excited to share three of my favorites with you, which represent some of the hottest items on the market right now. Accessories are so vital to your wardrobe, and they can literally make or break an outfit. While you're shopping this season, make sure you keep an eye out for each of the items below.

First, turquoise is back and better than ever. Turquoise pieces are great investments to add to your accessories collection because they regain their status every few years when turquoise comes back into style. Whether you buy bangles, rings, or a necklace, you will find that turquoise is available in a variety of price ranges and tones. Authentic turquoise is of course on the pricey side, but there are great faux turquoise pieces out there as well that you can buy for just a few dollars. Second on my list is an embellished sandal. Let’s face it . . . we all don’t have pretty feet! Embellished sandals are great to dress up a simple outfit, and they look amazing while remaining comfortable.

Lastly, embrace the idea of carrying a new handbag. Printed clutches and cross body pouches are my personal favorites for the season. If you're anything like me, downsizing purses is a severe problem, and trying to cram everything into a clutch seems like a nightmare. However, if you're willing to make the sacrifice for a day to vamp up jeans and a tee with one of these bags, you're going to be happy you did. Spring/Summer Trends for the Working Woman

Although shopping for spring and summer clothes to wear outside of work allows you to express more of your fashion sense, it is important to still bring style to the office while maintaining the business, professional dress code. While working in a corporate office, I’ve seen first-hand the lack of fashion that is expressed by women in the office. No matter what your age or where you work, update your work wardrobe with some of spring and summer's 2010 trends for the workplace.

Start off with the most key piece: a basic black pencil skirt that hits you slightly above, or slightly below the knee. This length is what is in style right now and most “appropriate” for the workplace. (Take this into consideration when you purchase dresses as well.) The black pencil skirt is timeless and looks great with almost any blouse, which brings me to number 2 . . . PLEASE update your blouses!!! I cannot tell you how many typical, boring blouses I see every day. Step out of the norm and go for a blouse with ruffles or gathers and pleats. Also, look for neutral colors that go with your basics.

Next, try looking for fun jackets. And I’m not talking about jackets with shoulder pads from the 80's and early 90’s. Some of the hottest trends in jackets right now are the black blazer, either fitted or boyfriend style. You can find a great blazer with cuffs that are turned up and feature a fun print on the inside. Also, anything utility inspired featuring hardware and zippers is big for this season. Pair these jackets up with a great necklace and tee and wear with pants or skirts.

Let's not forget to take inventory of your shoes. Shoes tend to get a little boring as people shoot for comfort instead of style. However, there are a lot of great wedges out there right now and heels that stray away from your typical pointed pump. While style in shoes may not suit your wardrobe every day, mix it up now and then and go for fun colors and styles.

Finally, do not be afraid of patterns and color. Spice up your basics and remember that you can still be office appropriate and sophisticated while incorporating a few trendy pieces. Not only will other’s be impressed with your new style, but you will feel more confident in yourself.

Has Easter Lost It's Luster?

I remember Easter Sunday very fondly as a child. Besides the fact that I received an Easter basket filled with all sorts of goodies, it was the day that I could wear bangs and the most "foo foo" of outfits. Frilly dresses, matching spring coats, lace trimmed socks, and white patent leather shoes were topped off with barrettes, ribbons, hats, purses, and white gloves. (You "Generation Xers" like myself remember a well-dressed "lady" never went any where without her gloves!) My mother made sure I looked like the girliest of girls on that day, and I loved every single minute of it.

Over the years I have noticed that people just don't dress their children the way they used to for Easter. Now don't get me wrong -- I don't buy into the commercialization that now dominates the day nor do I dismiss the real reason why we Christians celebrate Easter at all. However, I couldn't help but be reminded in church once again this year that we have become such a casual society that the next generation has no concept of the respect we demonstrated by dressing in our "Sunday best" when we entered a sanctuary, particularly on Easter Sunday. Going to church didn't mean looking like you were about to hit the playground, the movies, or the dance club, for that matter. (I can't begin to tell you the number of young ladies I saw yesterday with jeans that appeared to be painted on their bodies to match their tattoos.) Although I strongly denounce the idea that those who desire to attend church should be denied access because they can't afford to "dress the part," I am completely appalled by those who choose to spend their money to dress themselves and their children in attire completely inappropriate for the occasion.

I remember the days when church clothes were just that . . . "Church Clothes." They were the children's equivalent of adult work clothes: you wore them for that purpose and immediately took them off when you arrived home. (God forbid you tried to keep them on and not change into your "play clothes"!) This was how parents initially began to teach their children, at an elementary stage, what it meant to dress appropriately for the many things they did. Ever wonder today why young adults today can't grasp the concept of proper work attire?

Although I don't think we will ever return to the days I remember so fondly that taught us to have pride in our appearance even as youngsters, I commend those parents who continue to pass down the teachings of our generation to their little ones. Thank you Najah, Samantha, and Tolori for showing your little girls what it means to dress in honor of something special. I enjoyed seeing their pictures on Facebook yesterday. Above all, thank you Mommy for teaching me to have pride in myself and my physical appearance, and to respect the fact that there is a time and a place for everything.

Buyers Beware! Major Retailers Caught Re-Selling Lingerie

In most retail stores, it is a given that underwear is not returnable, right? Wrong! It seems like every major retailer selling lingerie gives their customers a clear warning at check out that the items are non-returnable, and consumers just agree knowing that, of course, that rule makes sense: no one wants to buy used underwear. Unfortunately, a few major retail establishments are facing headlines that they have been caught on tape accepting underwear returns, some of which were clearly worn. The horror to this is that they retag the merchandise and place it back on the floor to purchase again, without even hesitating! What’s even more disgusting is that the reasoning from retailers caught in the act was that it comes down to money for them: they don’t want to lose money so they retag and re-shelf them.

So what retailers were caught in the act? You might be surprised to know that some of the most popular stores like Victoria’s Secret, Gap, Macy’s, Bloomingdales and Nordstrom were among those caught reselling used underwear. This issue made it’s debut on the Today Show where people went undercover to return and watch their used underwear be placed back on the sales floor. Watch the video link for more details and rest easy that retailers like J.Crew, Saks Fifth Avenue and Express did accept returns, but did NOT put them back on the sales floor. So choose retailers wisely and always look over garments before purchasing.

Payless Strikes Deal with Isabel Toledo

Retailer Payless, who recently launched a shoe line with project runway winner Christian Siriano, is now striking up a deal with designer Isabel Toledo, who gained press for creating the dress Michelle Obama wore on Inauguration day. Toledo has been in the industry for over 25 years and designs iconic one of a kind pieces worn by the most elite all across the globe.

This fall, you will see Toledo’s collection of shoes and handbags debut at Payless, which will feature around five styles. While there are no final sketches to reveal yet for the line, Payless has noted that materials for the shoes and handbags include patent, nylon and mesh and will be priced under $40. Big retailers are branching out to bring you designer goods at affordable prices, and most have been successful in their ventures. Look for this line of Toledo’s shoes to hit stores in September!

Get Inspired By The 2010 Academy Awards Red Carpet Glam

Whether you were able to tune into the 2010 Academy Awards or if you missed it, here’s a quick recap of some of the night’s hottest looks. As I highlight three of my favorite trends, see which looks inspire you to pull from the red carpet straight to your closet.

The first trend I noticed a lot of on the red carpet was shades of nude.

Right now most of us are in that transitional stage of buying a new wardrobe: out with the dark, in with the bright and bold colors to complement the warmer weather. As you’re making your way through the stores preparing your spring wardrobe this year, give the pastel palette a try, with blushing pinks and ivory nudes. It’s a sophisticated, chic way to glam up your wardrobe.

The second trend I loved is the texture found on some of these gowns. From these looks, you can get a sense of ways to add texture to your own wardrobes. Cascading ruffles, pin tucks and pleatings are just some of the things to spot on jackets and tops. These small details on a great jacket can spice up your ordinary basic tee and jeans when you are out on the town.

Lastly, don’t be afraid of the metallics, sequins and beading! While sometimes beading can get too heavy and dramatic, look for pieces with small amounts of these details as accents. Accessories like handbags and shoes are a great way to fit them into your wardrobe without looking like a dancing queen in sparkling gems. Buyers Beware: High-End Retailers Behaving Like Discount Department Stores

If you have done any amount of shopping over the past year, you are fully aware that the retail industry has been hit really hard by the recession. With news of department store closings, limited amounts of inventory on the floor, and even some designer labels shutting their doors for good, it's no wonder that a number of retailers are forced to make some hard choices to salvage their bottom line. However, in my experiences at the beginning of this year, it has become blatantly obvious to me that one way high end retailers, in particular, are trying to recoup their lost dollars is by implementing stringent return policies that beg the question: "Have these retailers turned their back on the old adage 'you get what you pay for' by packaging shoddy customer service in a designer gift box?"

Some of you have already been privy to the details of my horrific experience at the Saks in Bala Cynwyd in early January. I was attempting to return a couture item by a young New York designer who has recently blown up. I purchased the item at his trunk show, and it sat in my closet for over a month when I thought: "if I don't wear this soon, I either don't like it or I don't need it." A week later, I took the jacket out of the closet to wear to an event I was attending that night, only to find out that my salesperson had left the security sensor in-tact. Because of my rather hectic schedule, I was unable to take the 45 minute drive out to Saks to have it removed for another week. (Yes, I should have called and requested that someone come out to my home to remove it, BUT this Saks has been known over the years for not being too "customer friendly.")

Once I finally made my way back out to the store, I contemplated just returning the item at that time. (Which is exactly what I should have done since I would have technically been within their 60 day return policy!) However, after searching the floor to find someone who looked willing to assist me (I was totally ignored by 3 sales associates gathered around chatting as I exited the elevator doors), I came upon a gentleman who I asked to remove the sensor, left the store, and returned home.

My next several weeks consisted of a significant amount of travel (St. Barth, Atlanta, Miami, and Orlando), and once I returned home and that jacket was still tagged and unworn, I made my way back out to the store. (This jacket clearly didn't work with my wardrobe.) I went upstairs, once again being ignored by the associates on the floor, and grabbed the first one I saw closest to the register. She took my receipt, scanned it, and it was down hill from there!

She explained that because I had purchased the item more than 60 days ago, their policy was that they could only return it at the current selling price, which was now $699. (I paid $1750 for the jacket.) I told her that was ridiculous (I could tell she thought it too), and asked to speak with the manager of the department. She came over and indeed confirmed that they could not return the item for more than $699. At that point, I asked to speak to the manager of the store. They sent over the Assistant General Manager of Operations who proceeded to verify that this was indeed their policy. When I gave him some insight into who I was and my purchasing power (I hate doing this), he stepped aside to call the Assistant General Manager, and reluctantly came back to say there was nothing he could do.

I began to explain to him that because I worked in Corporate America for many years before becoming a stylist, I fully understand that there is always something that can be done if you value the customer's business. (Anyone ever hear of STORE CREDIT?????) I told him they clearly didn't value my individual business nor that of the clients I represent, and that I would never shop in their store again . . . period. I asked for the name and number of someone in their corporate office that I could call and voice my utter disdain for the policy. He gave me the requisite information, and I left with my merchandise in hand.

Here's where it gets interesting. I immediately called the manager of their customer relations department in NYC, and left her a message. She called me back the next day, and asked me to give her the complete details of what had transpired. Once I was finished, she confirmed that WAS indeed their policy and that it has recently changed . . . it has been reduced to 30 days! She further explained that their special return policy for the holidays excluded anything purchased between Nov 1 and Jan 1 from being subjected to the "return at the current sale price" rule. However, she was quick to tell me that she couldn't extend that policy to me because I had purchased my item a whopping 25 days before Nov 1, and therefore the best she could do was to offer me the return at the current sales price. Realizing I was getting no where fast, I told her I was shocked and appalled by her decision, and that I thought the company had lost its grip on the value of good customer service. I also told her blatantly the amount of money I spent on clothes in the past year (which really got her attention but clearly not enough to do something different), and that I would continue to take my business to their local competitors like Boyds, Neiman Marcus, and Nordstrom where the return policies are more lenient and where I feel like my business and that of my clients are valued. I asked for her CEO's name and address and told her that I would definitely let him know that their return policy is just not up to par with their competitors.

I would like to be able to say now that my drama ended with this store. NOT! The following week I went to Neimans to return an evening wrap that I had purchased for a black tie event that I ended up not wearing. Once at the counter, things seemed to be running smoothly until I noticed that the sales associate who was helping me and one of her counterparts were whispering over on the other side of the counter. My sales associate eventually wanders over and says "Ma'am I'm going to have to get my manager to assist you with this." I look at her like she has six heads and ask her what's the problem. She responds nervously that I shouldn't get upset (I haven't yet, but she certainly has), and that she is not at liberty to tell me what the problem is. A few seconds later, in walks someone who is clearly the department manager, but absolutely positively does not dress or look like management material, and certainly not management material at Neiman Marcus (maybe Forever 21, but that would even be a stretch).

She tells me there's a problem because she smells perfume on the garment. I'm now irate. I tell her I have not worn this piece, I'm not sure what you smell, and you have obviously mistaken me for the many individuals who come in this store attempting to return items they have already worn. (Yes, I'm HIGHLY offended.)

She started to hem and haw when I told her to get the floor manager. I picked up the garment and smelled it. I realize what she smells is actually room deodorizer. Why? Because this item has sat for the past 3 weeks in my office right underneath the glade plug outlet. When the floor manager comes over (she looks about 22), I quickly jump to the punch, tell her that her accessories manager is claiming I have worn the item, and what she's going by is in fact the smell of room deodorizer. Now, I give this young girl credit - she sensed my mood, and realized she needed to diffuse this situation immediately. (Trust me when I say I was not sending out warm and fuzzy vibes.) She smelled the garment, looked at her accessories manager and said she definitely smelled deodorizer, and told her to return it.

While the return is being processed, I'm becoming more and more disgusted. The manager asks me for ID (am I in H&M or Neimans???) and my credit card, and I hand them both to her. Once the transaction is processed, I couldn't resist what I proceeded to do next.

I asked her if I could give her a bit of advice. I told her she may want to adjust her approach with the next customer, and before she blatantly accuses someone of something, she may want to ask them if they wore it. I told her that her behavior was offensive because that is not my M.O., and I advised her that she should always keep in mind that she never knows who she may be talking to. (Before leaving the store, I did let the store manager know I didn't appreciate her treatment, and that they could rest assured that particular store had lost me as a customer.)

Now . . . have I really vowed to never shop in a Saks or the King of Prussia Neiman Marcus again? Not really. If I have a client that wants to go to Neimans to select some pieces, I will definitely take her. I, unlike the management personnel I encountered in these stores, pride myself in providing my clients the highest level of customer service. When I'm in NYC, I often make a visit to Saks, simply because I love the store. However, will I now make sure that these two luxury department stores are options of last resort when I am either shopping for myself or my clients? Absolutely!!!! There are many places I can spend my money and that of my clients. I choose to spend it where I'm treated with the level of respect and customer service I have come to expect when purchasing from high end retailers.

Designers Take Note: Plus-Sized Women Strut Their Stuff in Couture

Fashionistas everywhere have been glued to the TV over the past two weekends as we watched our favorite celebrities walk the red carpet at the Golden Globe and SAG award shows. While some have wowed us with head to toe "fabulosity" (Olivia Wilde in Gucci), others have left us hoping that we never have to look at such fashion faux pauxs EVER again. (Thank you, Tina Fey!)

Last Monday, I joined "Good Day Philadelphia" anchors Mike Jerrick and Sheinelle Jones to chat about the Golden Globes red carpet hits and misses. I am happy to say that of the three women I picked, one was plus-sized: Mo'Nique. I thought she looked absolutely amazing in her gorgeous bronze gown by Reem Acra, and I was in awe when I saw her again at the SAGs all decked out in Balenciaga. Mo'Nique consistently shows us that plus-sized women can be glamorous too.

I must say that it is refreshing to know that some couture designers (including Pamella Roland who designed Gabourey Sidibe's dress for the SAGs) are starting to embrace the fact that everyone isn't a size 2. Women of all shapes and sizes want to look and feel fabulous, particularly when they are thrust into the limelight. I personally get quite frustrated with the limited selection of formal dresses I have to choose from when I'm asked to dress a client over a size 14. I feel like I'm in a tangled web of cheap fabric and dowdy designs that are reminiscent of a mother-of-the-bride dress gone bad!

I recently had to dress such a client for her wedding reception, which of course is one of the biggest events in a woman's life. I was fortunate enough to have had a relationship with an amazing up and coming designer in New York, NIMA, and he custom designed a knock-out couture dress for her that made her look and feel like a queen. She was thrilled, to say the least, and could not stop telling her family and friends: "Big girls can wear couture, too!"

To all of the designers out there who have broadened their size spectrum . . . thank you!

Embrace a Style Makeover in 2010!

Over the past week I have been making phone calls to all of my clients, asking them one simple question: "What are your style goals for 2010?" Each of them has been eager to chat - many saying that they want to leave their style mishaps of the past in the past, and to continue building the "fashion fierce" wardrobes I have been working with them to create. But one client in particular had to take her style goal to the next level: "I don't want to look 50 anymore!"

To say "mama" was proud is an understatement. She proceeded to tell me she was sick of her sweater sets and those long skirts I had encouraged her to get rid of the previous year (but I didn't push her since I was bringing her along slowly). We proactively made a list of everything she should purge from her closet and donate to "Dress for Success," (www.dressforsuccess.org) and set a date in March to start building her new wardrobe for the spring. A few days later, she sent me an email with a status update outlining what she had disposed of and the additional items she thought she needed.

As I updated her file with this new information (adding a few more items I thought I would sneak in for good measure), I was reminded that encouraging my clients to set style goals for themselves at the beginning of the year forced them to pause for a moment to focus on their image. After all, if we're going to set resolutions to finally lose those 10 pounds or to move to the next level in our career, shouldn't we ultimately be concerned with how we package ourselves? Your attire and overall physical appearance are the first two things people notice, well before you open your mouth to engage them. Since a first impression is a lasting impression, why not make it a fabulous one?

One of my favorite monthly features in Harper's Bazaar Magazine is the "Fabulous At Every Age" section. (Last year they put out another style book by the same name.) From your 20's to your 70' the editors show you how you can look fashionable and fabulous with age appropriate pieces that keep people wondering, "how old is she really?"

I encourage all of my followers to make sure they focus on themselves in 2010. Instead of throwing on those sweats and running out the door, why not consider wearing a pair of boyfriend jeans (they are just as comfortable), a black tee and a colorful scarf? How I Became A Red-Soled Goddess

Everyone who knows me personally knows how much I love birthdays . . . particularly my own. After all, your birthday is truly the only day of the year that is entirely yours to do with it whatever you want. Last week I had the pleasure of celebrating yet another birthday -- for the entire week I might add -- and each day turned into one feel good moment after another. But despite how exciting the week had already been, I never in a million years would have anticipated that on last Thursday I would be sitting side by side with the most notable women's shoe designer in the entire world, Monsieur Christian Louboutin.

It was indeed a surreal experience . . . one I will never, ever forget. My husband and I were in NYC (part deux of my celebratory week; part one was spent with my girlfriends at Canyon Ranch Miami Beach), and we headed to Bergdorf Goodman because I was in search of a pair of shoes for an upcoming black tie event. As we stepped off of the escalator into the women's shoe salon, I was taken aback by the number of people buzzing around the department at 2:30 on a weekday. I mean I knew why I was there, but was it feasible that all of these women just happened to be looking for shoes as well? I immediately said to my husband "I wonder what the heck is going on here?" and then I began looking around the floor for answers. As I focused on what was going on about three feet in front of me, I noticed there were a bunch of women patiently standing in line, obviously waiting to meet someone important. Because it was literally standing room only, I couldn't immediately see who was seated at the table. But as I looked to the right of the area where the table was, I saw a woman holding a pair of those infamous red-soled shoes. I audibly gasped, my heart started palpitating, and although I was almost rendered speechless, I managed to say to my husband, "Oh my god . . . Christian Louboutin is here signing his shoes!"

Whatever my original purpose was for coming into the store, I didn't care! I told my husband to find a seat because I was now in search of my very own pair of Louboutins (my first believe it or not) so I could be amongst the privileged standing in that line. For a while it seemed as though I was walking around in circles, moving from one fab shoe to another, desperately wishing that my buddy Sean was there to just tell me which shoe to buy. (Yes, sometimes stylists need help too!) I immediately called Sean on the phone, resisted my urge to scream, and very quietly but emphatically said to him, "I'm in Bergdorfs, Christian Louboutin is here signing his shoes, and boy do I wish you were here to pick these shoes out for me!" He was equally as excited, and told me if I needed his help making a decision, to send him a picture message. (That's what great friends and stylists do!) After I hung up the phone, I finally calmed myself down. I chose a couple of pairs of shoes to try on, and went searching for a sales associate. I tried on the first pair, walked over to my husband to show him, and the decision was made.

My sales guy told me to go stand in line while he processed the transaction. There went the heart palpitations again. A few minutes later my salesman came back with my shoes and my receipt, and handed me the right shoe out of the box so it would be ready for signing. As I moved a little further up in the line, a young lady asked me for the spelling of my first name, and then handed me a piece of paper to give Mr. Louboutin when it was my turn.

I eventually signaled for my husband to come and get my camera. I wanted every single moment of this once in a lifetime experience documented. As I came to be the next person in line, I began chatting with a gentleman who was obviously the head of the women's designer shoe department. He asked me if I knew that Christian was going to be in the store that day, and I explained to him that my hubby and I were in NYC celebrating my birthday and just happened to come in. He became excited for me and said "It was meant to be!"

When I first sat across from Mr. Louboutin and handed him my shoe, I literally felt my heart thumping in my throat. But he was so engaging and so charming, I relaxed in about two seconds. We exchanged hellos, and he immediately admired the shoe I handed to him. (Nothing better than having the shoe designer himself give you that stamp of approval that you chose well!) He then proceeded to tell me how beautiful he thought the name Adrienne was, and he asked me did I like my name as a child. I immediately found myself in conversation with him about how he has a very good friend named Adrienne who didn't like her name as a child either because no one could spell or pronounce it properly -- the story of my life. I thought it quite interesting that he went on to say that the name Adrienne is very much a "woman's" name (as opposed to a girl's name), because after all this man certainly knows women!

After he autographed my shoe, I asked if I could temporarily occupy the empty seat next to him so my hubby could take a picture. He replied "of course," and I was again taken aback by just how down to earth he was. Once the photo-op ended, he bid me farewell, and I truly felt as if I had just stepped out of a dream.

Since my husband and I returned from NYC, I have taken the right shoe out of the box several times just to admire it. I am looking forward to wearing them, even though deep down inside I feel like they should be placed in a glass case and displayed on a pedestal "museum style." I know there are many women around the world who share the love of these red soles, and have them in their closet as their most prized possessions. But I feel so privileged to be among the few women who will be able to say I have met the man, and have the autographed sole to show it!

Why Would You Wear Your Boyfriend's Jeans?

Every time we turn around there's a new style of jeans taking center stage. Several years back the emergence of the low-rise phenomenon had mother's of teenage daughters -- not to mention dads -- shaking their heads in horror. Shortly thereafter, the "yummy mommy" (i.e one who would NEVER be caught in "mom jeans") jumped on the bandwagon after realizing not only how comfortable they were but also how they transformed your body. (They conveniently fell below that little "pouch" many of us can't get rid of and gave you a streamlined look.)

Designers quickly realized conservative moms were not trying to hear "how low can you go," so the mid-rise jean was ultimately unveiled. And just when everyone thought they had comfortably settled into the latest and greatest jean fad, we were thrust back into the 80's with the re-emergence of the skinny jean.

This summer style makers turned to loose, comfy fitting clothes, including harem pants "ala MC Hammer." And yes, the jean makers followed suit - boyfriend jeans were born. If you need a visual, imagine -- you put on a pair of your man's jeans that are loose-fitting, look "lived-in," the knees are worn, and you can't keep them up without a belt!

When I first took a look at these jeans, I thought, "no way . . . not me." And then one day I saw a pair of ripped up Joes Jeans (my favorite brand) online, and I said "what the heck, let me give them a try." Much to my husband's chagrin, I fell in love. It wasn't because they made my body look good. (These are definitely not the jeans to enhance your shape.) It was that they are just so darn comfortable! They are super soft and feel like you're relaxing in a pair of your favorite sweats.

I, of course, had to figure out a way to style them so I could still look like a diva and not some tomboy walking down the street. The key is to roll them up a few times (I prefer thinner rolls than pictured above), and then funk them out with a pair of high-heeled gladiators (I just happen to have the ones pictured above), and a cute loose top. You can even throw on a chic jacket for added pizazz.

I know - I know: some of you just can't get with that. No worries. Yesterday I purchased what I am sure will be the first of many Michael Jackson t-shirts from a store we all know and love, Urban Outfitters. Known for their graphic tees, funky clothing, and other cool paraphernalia, Urban Outfitters was the first place I decided to check for official MJ clothing. (Some of you may recall all of the cool Obama tees they carried pre and post the election.) Although they have yet to receive their women's tees (they should be arriving shortly), I had one of the sales associates on the floor scour to find me what I was told was the last t-shirt they had in stock. (I was lucky - it was in my size!) I thought the shirt was very cool because it's simply a graphic of his feet doing his classic fancy footwork.

A Sweet Farewell to a Musical Icon . . . a Fashion Trendsetter

I would be remiss if I didn't devote my blog this week to the one I consider to be the greatest musical legend of all time - Mr. Michael Jackson. Like many of you, I was simply devastated upon hearing the news yesterday that the "King of Pop" is no longer with us.

I will always remember exactly where I was and what I was doing when I heard the news. And although last night I had the pleasure of sitting front row at a Kenny G concert, my mind was elsewhere, and I couldn't stop looking at my Blackberry for updates. Michael was not only a gifted musician (he was indeed a musical genius), he was a fashion trendsetter. Who else could get away with wearing a sequined glove and white socks with black pants 2 inches too short? I am a bit embarrassed to say that when the Thriller album came out when I was in high school, I had the "Beat It" jacket (in white not red), and I used to pull that front piece of my hair down just like Michael. He was my hero . . . He was my musical idol . . . He was and will ever be my Michael, and I pray that he is finally at peace.

Fabulous . . . Fashionable . . . Fifty

On last Saturday I had the pleasure of helping my client celebrate her milestone birthday "fashion" style. I came up with the theme "Fabulous, Fashionable, Fifty," and she carried this theme through to perfection! From the invitations, to the gift bags, to the outstanding raffle prizes (guests received raffle tickets for each item they brought to be donated to Dress for Success), to the requirement that everyone come dressed "Summer Chic,"this party was nothing short of being "fashion fierce."

I had the honor of doing my "Recessionista Chic" presentation (concepts taught via a scavenger hunt and a word matching game), and was pleased with the overwhelming response I received when I opened the floor for questions. I thought some of my answers might be helpful to others so I've taken the liberty to post them here.

What do you think about stockings?
I never wear them. If you must wear them, never EVER where them with open toe shoes. (Peep toes are OK - again, if you absolutely must.)

Can plus size women wear prints?
Yes, but stay away from horizontal stripes and large prints that overpower you and the garment.

What type of maxi dresses are appropriate for plus-size women?
I love maxi dresses, and I think they are appropriate for just about any body type. I would suggest that if you are plus-size, stay away from dresses that have layered ruffles the entire length of the garment. Also, wear heels to avoid looking frumpy. (That goes for all of you shorties like me as well.)

How can young people use what's currently in their wardrobes to double as business attire?
This can be challenging, but not impossible, particularly if some of their wardrobe falls into the "business casual" category. If they currently have dress pants, pairing them with a jacket or cardigan and top is a good start. And they can wear their halter tops or tanks/camis underneath their jackets or cardigans as long as 1) they keep the jackets or cardigans on, and 2) the necklines are not too low and plungy.

How should you organize your closet?
By article of clothing and color. (E.g. all pants should be grouped together and arranged from lightest (white, cream, camel) to darkest (navy, black).) And get rid of ALL wire hangers! I prefer wooden, but these can be pricey so heavy duty plastic ones are okay as well. (Actually, almost anything is better than wire!)

When building a professional wardrobe, how many pieces of each item should you start with?
I suggest starting with pant suits so that you have the most options for mixing and matching. Start with 4 -- 1 in each of your basic colors (tan, brown, navy, black). If the suit comes with the option of buying the skirt as well, buy it! Purchase 3-4 tops to go with each suit, and if you can, select tops that can be worn with more than one suit. Add cardigans (2-3) in tan, red, or grey. Now you can mix and match jackets or cardigans with your pants or skirts. Your wardrobe options have instantly become endless.

What is the best way to maximize my wardrobe?
Accessorize, accessorize, accessorize. This season it's all about bold chunky jewelry, and it can turn a simple white tee from boring to glamorous. You should also resist the urge to wear the same combinations over and over again. Choose a different top the next time you wear your favorite black pants. Also remember, many things in your closet can be worn with jeans even if you didn't buy them to do so.

How to be an "After 5" Diva on a "9 to 5" Dime

You're a mover and a shaker and have found yourself on every invite list for the hottest cocktail parties, black tie events, and local fundraisers. To complicate matters, your social network has expanded to include other event A- listers who move in your same circle. How do you possibly attend all of these formal events and continue to look fabulous without breaking the bank? Following these simple steps will ensure that you have some money left in your little evening clutch and still look "fashion fierce."

1. Never EVER wait to the last minute to get your outfit together. Do your shopping early and often. Hit the clearance racks of the evening wear departments in major department stores and boutiques at the end of the season and start building an after 5 wardrobe. If you wait until the last minute you are likely to spend top dollar for something you may not be 100% satisfied with. My motto: a woman should always be prepared to accept a last minute invitation.

2. If you are on a limited budget, choose cocktail and evening dresses that are classic pieces and in classic colors. First build your wardrobe with dark colors: black, navy, and wine. Leave anything really dramatic or bright (e.g. red or hot pink) in the store. Why? Because you want to be able to wear these dresses to multiple events without it being obviously noticeable. If you wear a dramatic red dress to more than one event and you move in the same circle of people, it WILL look like you are wearing the same red dress.

3. Make sure you buy multiple pieces of jewelry to match each dress you own. For example, for a simple black dress, purchase chunky gold and silver jewelry. If you have extra money, throw in some pearls (lots of pearls at varying lengths - faux is ok) and clear or colored crystals. And make sure each set of jewelry is stylistically different. If you buy a gold set with a chunky necklace and simple post earrings, buy the silver set with long chandelier earrings and a cuff bracelet. Keep in mind you do want your jewelry to be statement pieces so they should be dramatic. This way, when you have to wear the same dress to multiple events, the focus will be on your jewelry and not on your dress. Diversity is key for camouflaging that you may be recycling dresses.

4. Purchase multiple wraps, scarves or other pieces that can go over your dresses in different colors and textures. If you love pins, work them Michelle Obama style. Add one to the dress alone or be creative and drape your wrap around the dress and use the pin as an accent piece. Pins can add pizzazz to a simple dress or wrap and make it look completely different. (Just don't overdo it!)

Headed by Susan Lyne, a former top executive at Martha Stewart Omnimedia and ABC Entertainment, and founded by Alexis Maybank (founding member of eBay) and Alexandra Wilson (had tenures at Bulgari and Louis Vuitton), the company has amassed one million members within 18 months of launching.

Here's the scoop. The site offers access to some of the hottest designer merchandise for women, men, and children at prices up to 70% off of retail. There is at least one sale per weekday (often more), and every Monday an email blast is sent to all members outlining the week's featured designers as well as the date and time that each sale will take place. Are We Afraid to Embrace Our Femininity?

Each year as the warmer weather begins to move in, I get excited about breaking out in my spring wardrobe - flirty dresses, cute girly tops with jeans and strappy sandals, and bold accessories. However, I realize that not every woman embraces their warm weather gear.

Once spring and summer arrive, many of us are challenged by the fact that we can no longer hide behind our big coats, bulky sweaters, hats, and scarves. This time of the year there's more skin showing and less alternatives to camouflage what we perceive as our "flaws." Some of us literally hate spring fashions primarily for this reason. For those of you who find yourself in this category, I want to ask you a question - is it really about the clothes or are you simply afraid to embrace your femininity?

Women often find it challenging to find the balance between being "strong" and "accomplished" and being feminine. There's a "softness" associated with femininity that experiences in the work place and in our homes have taught us is negative. However, the bottom line is that our "softness" is what makes us women. (And quite frankly it's what our significant others see that attracts them to us.)

There is absolutely nothing wrong with putting on clothes that make you look and feel feminine. Little girls are not challenged by this at all. My youngest godchild is four years old, and her mother still has to fight with her to wear something other than a dress. If you ask her why she likes to wear dresses she will tell you: "Because I'm a girl, and they make me look pretty."

For those of you who are "girly" challenged, I strongly suggest that you make a commitment this summer to change that. Make an appointment to get those nails and toes done, try a new hair style, and put on something that makes you feel like the woman you were meant to be. Who knows - this may just be the "pick me up" you need to attract that certain someone of the opposite sex and have that "spring fling."

Nordstrom Cherry Hill: A "Grand" Opening Gala

Two weeks ago I had the pleasure of attending the Nordstrom Cherry Hill Grand Opening Gala. It was a night of amazing proportions – non-stop hors d’oeuvres and desserts, complimentary open bar, an electrifying band, live model mannequins, and four hours (6 – 10 pm) to shop until you drop before the official store opening two days later. My girlfriend and I arrived around 7:30 that evening, and as we pulled up to the curb to leave our car with the valet, we knew we were in store for something pretty spectacular. My heart skipped a beat as we walked through the opened doors while being greeted by a neverending host of store personnel, some ready to extend you your first glass of champagne for the evening) One thing that was evident two minutes after getting there: the Nordstrom brothers know how to throw a party!

As we paused to get a bite to eat and to assess our surroundings, my initial reaction was, “I have never seen so many sales associates per capita in my entire life.” It was clear that this event was not only designed to raise money for a few worthy causes (proceeds from the ticket cost of $100 per person benefited The Links, Incorporated, the Philadelphia Museum of Art, and Symphony C), but to give all of the guests as much of an opportunity as possible to snatch up the best of the spring and summer collections before the doors were opened to the general public. And that is exactly what my girlfriend and I did! Because I’m the shopper, my girlfriend initially deferred to me: “What are you looking for?" ; "What department do you want to hit first?” But soon enough she was bitten by the shopping bug herself and started wandering off without me. (I dare say I have never seen her have that much fun shopping in my entire life, and I’ve known her for over 20 years!)

I took a quick break from my shopping for a moment to introduce myself to fashion designer, Tracy Reese. (She was absolutely charming and gracious as I expressed my love for her line and how much I have enjoyed attending her runway shows during New York Fashion Week.) And much to my surprise, the sales associate who was assisting me that evening happened not to be just a sales associate but one of the store’s personal stylists. (Ladies, ask for Dyan Demidio. She’s amazing and full of energy!) By the time 10:00 rolled around, we were still shopping! The band stopped playing, and we were . . . still shopping!!! I’m slightly ashamed to say that we literally closed the store that night.

Needless to say, I am ecstatic that there is now another Nordstrom in our midst. The King of Prussia location is certainly more convenient for me, but I will be making regular trips to Cherry Hill. Although the store is not as large as the one in King of Prussia (Cherry Hill measures in at 138,000 square feet), it is considered one of Nordstrom’s designer stores (basically more glitz and glam, of which there are about 20 in the country). At Cherry Hill you will notice a much expanded designer handbag department set up boutique style, the selection of designers featured (this store sells David Yurman in their fine jewelry department), and a fabulous new concept for the fitting room in the BP. (junior) department – a mini living room awaits you as you enter, complete with funky furniture and "foo-foo" pillows. All in all, three words sum up my overall assessment of this new addition to the Cherry Hill Mall: Job Well Done!

Bluefly: It's not Just Last Season's Ultimate Hook-up for the Fashion Obsessed

Attention all you fashionistas who love and swear by bluefly.com! I made an alarming discovery yesterday that I had to share with you. Just Monday I purchased a pair of "slammin" nude patent leather carved wooden wedge platform sandals by Miu Miu. My "main man" Sean General, the buyer for the Women's Couture department at Boyds Philadelphia, had put them aside for me (although we were just meeting for lunch - thanks for always spending my money, Sean) knowing that they would be my best friend for casual wear this summer. I bought them instantly and couldn't wait to get them home to place them amongst all of their other friends in my closet.

Well yesterday I just happened to be on bluefly looking at some of the latest items they've received from some of my favorite designers, including Miu Miu. Much to my surprise my sandals popped up. And for about $130 less than what I paid for them! Of course I quickly looked to see if they had them in my size, which they didn't. (I mean I love Sean and everything, but why give more of my money away than I have to!)

What was shocking to me was that this shoe is from Miu Miu's Spring 2009 collection, as opposed to being an item from last season. I do admit that it's been a while since I've done any competitive pricing on bluefly to see if they do indeed carry current season items at a discount. Oops! There Must be a Typo in My Fashion Magazine: I Can't Find this Item ANYWHERE!

Today I had the honor of doing a segment on the Fox 29 Philadelphia morning show, "Good Day Philadelphia." Michelle Buckman, Fox 29 News Consumer Reporter, asked me to answer a question many fashionistas have asked, particularly at the beginning of a new season: Why can't I find that fabulous piece I saw in the latest issue of my favorite fashion magazine online or in my local store?

My answers were pretty simple. One major reason is because many of the fashion editors are based in New York City and when they do their fashion layouts, they tend to select pieces from stores and boutiques in Manhattan. That's why magazines like Lucky are great because they occasionally have a regional section. Another reason you can chase and chase that cute pair of sandals or gorgeous top and never hit the jackpot is because those pieces you see were actually samples done for runway shows or collection previews. And guess what - they were never placed into production!

So what's a woman to do? I suggest taking the concept shown in the magazine, which basically shows the season's fashion trends. Then head to your laptop or to your local mall and shop for pieces that represent that trend. For example, one of the outfits that Michele Buckman featured was found in the March issue of InStyle magazine. The outfit centered around an adorable embellished short sleeve cardigan from J. Crew. Michelle had no luck finding this sweater online or in any of Jcrew's stores. But I was able to take the basic concept, "short sleeve cardigan," and recreate that entire outfit by finding an animal print short sleeve cardigan, shell, faux python clutch, embellished flat sandals, and dangling earrings. And the best part - the outfit in the magazine cost over $1200; mine was only $250! (Talk about creating the look for less!)

But, I do know that there are those "desperate" situations where you feel as though you cannot go on without having that one "it" item of the season. Yours truly has been there, trust me. In those cases, I suggest you get on the phone, call the store listed, describe the item (along with the name of the magazine and page number), and if they have it in stock, ask them to send it to you. Some stores like bebe make it easier for you to scout all of their stores. They have a customer service number that you can call, and they will do a nationwide search for you and give you the phone number of the store that has it in stock.

Whether you decide to recreate the look or take on a new part-time job to find the actual piece shown in your favorite magazine, just have fun with the new season's trends. And don't forget to watch those dollars - looking chic doesn't mean your purse has to look empty!

Unless you have somehow managed to sleep through the past couple of years, this will not come as a surprise: we are indeed in a recession. Amidst talks of cutbacks, layoffs, expense reductions, budget cuts, and of course, store closings, fashion conscious women are scurrying to discover how they can continue to look good without breaking the bank. The fashion industry has even coined a term to describe these women: "recessionistas."

If you have been wondering how you can continue to look like you have just stepped out of the pages of Vogue without dipping into your depleting savings accounts, the following tips will help you cost-consciously spring into the upcoming season.

1. Shop Your Closet
Each of us has that one article of clothing that has been tucked away just waiting for the perfect piece to accompany it. Truth is, that perfect piece is likely already in your closet, along with many other items you have ignored. Before you make another move to the next sale, go straight to your closet and make some new winning combinations. Bought that lace cami because it was on the sale rack and you knew it might one day come in handy? Throw it on under a cute cropped jacket and pull on your favorite jeans. If you're not the most fashion savvy individual, here is where hiring a wardrobe stylist can really come in handy. A good stylist can put outfits together you have never even thought of, and leave you with photos so there's no guessing involved the next time you get dressed. If you're really on a budget, invite one of your fashionable friends to come over and lend you a hand.

2. Swap with Friends
Women these days are finding new and creative ways to spruce up their wardrobe and make new friends to boot. Why not host a party at your home and instead of it being a potluck dinner, make it a potluck shopping experience. Tell everyone to bring one article of clothing or an accessory in excellent condition that they no longer use, pile them up for selection, and may the best woman win! If there's anything left over that doesn't seem to work in anyone's closet, don't take it back home. Donate it to "Dress for Success," a wondeful organization dedicated to empowering women and giving them a second chance.

3. Accessorize to the Max
If you want to buy something new this season, start with accessories. A new scarf, purse, or piece of jewelry can add a pop of color and make that cute summer dress and strappy sandals look like an entirely new ensemble. And keep in mind: accessories don't have to break the bank. Stores like Forever 21 (no, you don't have to be 21 to shop there) have the best accessories and they're cheap! (I'm talking $3 - $5 for earrings and enameled bangles, and $8 - $10 for scarves.)

4. Switch it Up a Bit
So we all have that pair of slacks that we bought to where with that top, those shoes, and that purse, right? Stop right there. Do not pass go and do not collect $200 bucks unless you pick a different shirt out of your closet the next time around. Those black slacks with the white pinstripe can be worn with more colors than just white. Why not try pink, light blue, or grey? And if you're really feeling adventurous - knock their socks off with lime green. Watch how many compliments you get and how quickly you begin to believe that's a new pair of slacks!

5. Embrace the Blue Light Special
I may be showing my age a bit here, but do you remember the days of the K-Mart blue light special? (For those of you young-uns, yes, there was actually a swirling blue light highlighting the featured buy of the day.) Fast forward to the new age of mass market retailers like Target and Kohls. You can find some serious bargains here (even some "a la" designer labels like Vera Wang and Isaac Mizrahi). A few months ago I spotted an amazing gold and cream tweed boucle wool coat with 3/4 lengths sleeves on a clearance rack at Target for $15! Sure, it's not going to be the quality of Cinzia Rocca piece, but who the heck cares for $15??????? Stores like TJ Maxx, Ross, and Marshalls are also known for stocking designer duds at discount prices. So when it comes to minimizing the impact on your pocket, never, I mean never, underestimate the power of that blue light!
